Daniel Bolte Doubles in Game Winners as UWA Beats UWF, 4-3

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Daniel Bolte drove in a pair of runs with a double down the left field line in the ninth inning as sixth-ranked West Alabama came from behind to defeat West Florida, 4-3, in the Gulf South Conference Baseball Tournament Sunday at Tartt Field.

The win moves the Tigers to 38-9 and into a second round winner's bracket game at noon on Monday against either Alabama Huntsville or West Georgia. West Florida likely ends its season at 30-18.

Trailing 3-0 going into the ninth inning, West Alabama was searching for whatever the kryptonite might be to solve he mystery of West Florida right-hander Walker O'Conner, who had notched 15 straight scoreless innings over his last two starts against the Tigers.

Jack Cockrum led off the inning with an infield single, and after Mitch Holgate popped out, Eddie Kieffer, Jake Bush and Luigi Mendez had back-to-back-to-back singles to chase O'Connor. Argonaut closer Ronnie May was brought in to face Tanner Rainey with runners at second and third.

After getting behind 2-0, including a wild pitch that scored Kieffer, May intentionally walked Rainey to face Bolte, who was 0-for-3 and hitting less than .280. Bolte then drove a 1-1 pitch down the left field line to seal the deal for West Alabama.

"What can you say about these guys? They never, ever quit," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "As we have all season, we stayed focused when we got down, didn't try to do too much and just kept passing the stick along.

"Some folks probably thought I had lost my mind by not bunting there, but Daniel had been getting good looks all day and I just had a gut feeling," Rundles said. "Probably where I messed up was not bunting (Nick) Delgado to try to go up by two runs, but I got greedy."

Rainey, the UWA closer, worked the ninth inning to save the game for Tiger starter Fernando Gonzalez (10-1).  After getting Kyle Hamner to fly out, Michael Tomlinson reached on a throwing error. Rainey then induced a comebacker to start the game-ending double play.

"Fernando pitched well and Rainey did a good job even though they put the bat on the ball," Rundles said. "When you are as athletic as Tanner is you are able to make big plays like the double play at the end."

Gonzalez allowed eight hits and two earned runs while striking out five and not walking anyone. O'Connor (7-4) ended up taking the loss with all four runs being charged to him. O'Connor was the pitcher who ended West Alabama's 20-game winning streak back on April 20. That loss is the only one for the Tigers since March 7, who have won 27-of-28.

"Walker O'Connor is a terrific pitcher who had our number. Thankfully, we were finally able to put some hits together late in the game," Rundles said. "West Florida came in here today ready to play and that's a credit to them and Coach (Mike) Jeffcoat.

Kieffer, Mendez and Nick Delgado had two hits each in a 10-hit UWA offensive attack. Bolte's double was the only extra base hit of the game for the Tigers.

Chase Kieffer had a solo home run, his third of the year, in the third inning. He also singled in a run in the seventh inning. Sean Plunkett had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Argos.

Beginning with the hosting Tigers at noon, the GSC Tournament continues with three more games at Tartt Field on Monday. Game times are scheduled for noon, 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
