FIT Snaps West Alabama Win Streak at 10 Games

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – A pair of Florida Tech pitchers limited West Alabama to just four hits on the way to a 5-1 college baseball victory over the Tigers Friday at the NCAA Division II South Regional at Tartt Field.

In a battle of two teams in the top seven in the nation, No. 7 FIT improved to 37-12 and snapped No. 4 West Alabama's win streak at 10 games. The Tigers dropped to 41-10 in a game where the two teams had to endure a four-hour and 40-minute weather delay.

West Alabama will play the loser of the Nova Southeastern-Tampa game at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Nova and Tampa kick off Saturday's action at 10:30 a.m. Florida Tech and Lynn will play the third game on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

"It's just one loss and one game," UWA head Coach Gary Rundles said. "Last I checked you have to lose two to be out of this thing and I feel good about us being able to bounce back because we have all year long."

Florida Tech scored a pair of runs in the first inning on just one hit and West Alabama picked up a single run in the fourth without getting a hit before the storms came and halted play until 9 p.m.

After both going five innings in a game that began at 3:10 p.m., neither starting pitcher was able to return following the lengthy delay, but both figured in the decision. FIT starter and winner Ty Cohen (7-2) allowed just two hits while striking out three and walking two. UWA starter Fernando Gonzalez (10-2) allowed just three hits and no earned runs while striking out five and taking the loss.

FIT freshman reliever Andrew Beyer pitched the final four innings for the Panthers, allowing just two hits and striking out six for his second save of the year. He struck out the side in the sixth and ninth innings.

"Our offense obviously didn't do what we needed to do," Rundles said. "You have to tip your hat to their freshman (Beyer). He came in there needing to get 12 outs and got six of them by strikeouts."

Florida Tech scored three runs off UWA reliever Brandon Pennington, getting one in the sixth on a pair of singles and two more in the seventh. Austin Allen drove in two in the seventh with a long single off the base of the wall in right field.

Parker Madden and Luigi Mendez had two hits each to account for all of West Alabama's offense.

Allen and Ryan Sinzenich had two hits apiece for Florida Tech, who rapped out nine against three Tiger pitchers.
