Tigers Win GSC Tourney Opener, 10-4, Over Delta State

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Sixth-ranked West Alabama rapped out 13 hits and four Tiger pitchers limited Delta State to just four hits as UWA defeated the Statesmen, 10-4, on the first day of play in the Gulf South Conference Baseball Tournament Saturday at Tartt Field.

West Alabama improved to 37-9 with the victory, while Delta State dropped to 22-17.

The Tigers advanced to the winners bracket and will play the loser of Saturday night's late game between West Florida and West Georgia at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Delta State and Valdosta State will play an elimination game at noon Sunday.

"We didn't play great, but you have to be pleased with a win in this tournament and anytime you get one in this league," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "Our pitching struggled, but managed to keep everything under control. The two long balls definitely came at the right time."

Mitch Holgate and Tanner Rainey both hit solo homers for West Alabama, Holgate's 12th and Rainey's 14th. Holgate, Rainey, Parker Madden, Nick Delgado and Adam Chamblee had two hits apiece for the Tigers, who put the game away with a seven-run fourth inning. Delgado and Chamblee both drove in two runs.

West Alabama used six hits and a pair of Delta State errors in the seven-run fourth. Both of Chamblee and Delgado's RBI came in the frame where 11 Tigers came to the plate.

"We took advantage of situations when they were presented to us," Rundles said. "It seems like when opponents go to the bullpen we seem to come alive."

Trent Giambrone had a two-run homer for Delta State, who was held to a season-low four hits for the third time this year. Two of those came against West Alabama. The Tigers won two-of-three games from the Statesmen in February.

Josh Jones (4-1) earned the pitching win for UWA in relief of starter Jorge Cruz, who lasted four innings. Jones didn't allow a run on one hit over three innings. Delta State starter Drew Milligan (3-3) was charged with the loss.

We need to build on this win and continue to play with confidence," Rundles said. "This one is over with now and tomorrow is a new day."

Day pass tickets to the GSC Tournament are $8 for adults, $5 for GSC students with proper ID and students aged 6-17. Children under 5 are admitted free. A Tournament pass is available for $20.
