CUMBERLAND, Tenn. – Brian McNamara netted the game-winning goal off of a free kick by Tom Reilly in the 83
rd minute to lift Cumberland University to a 1-0 victory over the University of West Alabama men's soccer team on Sunday.
Cumberland advances to 7-0 overall on the season, while West Alabama dips to 1-4-1. For McNamara, it marks his fifth goal of the year.
"Obviously we are disappointed with the result, but it was a battle to the very end," said UWA head coach
Matthew Thorne. "We conceded a set piece late and that can be the difference from winning and losing at this level."
The Bulldogs out-shot UWA 12-3 as the Tigers failed to frame any of their shots. Bennet Strutz (7-0) took the win in the net for Cumberland, while UWA goalkeeper
Joshua Bramwell (1-1) completed four saves but allowed his first goal as a Tiger.
"I am proud of our performances this weekend," Thorne said. "Our schedule start this season has been one of the hardest in the nation. My belief is that we will be more prepared for the battles we will face in the Gulf South Conference."
West Alabama men's soccer will open Gulf South Conference action on Friday when they take on Delta State University. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. in Cleveland, Miss.
"Our GSC record is 0-0, so now our focus is trying to be as successful as possible in the league," said Thorne.
