BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of West Alabama fell in double-header volleyball action to Lynn University and Barton College in the final day of the Courtyard Boca Raton Invitational on Saturday. Lynn took the first game 3-1 in sets, while Barton edged out the Tigers 3-2 in the second match.
West Alabama drops to 0-3, while Lynn improves to 2-0 and Barton College to 1-3.
"We are really happy about the way we played against Lynn," said UWA head coach
Jordan Lay. "They are a great ball team and we played with them for most of the match. I am proud of the way our ladies rebounded from yesterday, but we definitely did not play to our level against Barton.
"Going 0-3 on opening weekend is far from ideal, but I believe that this squad will rebound in a big way. We're learning from this, moving on and focusing on next weekend."
Lynn opened the day taking the first set 25-22. UWA responded with winning set two 25-23, but fell 25-21 and 25-18 in the following two sets.
The Tigers bounced back from dropping the first two sets to Barton 25-23 and 25-22 by taking set three 25-21 and set four 25-21. The Bulldogs answered in the fifth set with a 15-9 victory.
Morgan Dulaney led the Fighting Knights in the first match with 19 kills and .562 attack percentage. She added nine digs on defense, which was led by Katie Knight with 20 digs.
Briana Sandifer tallied her second double-double in two days with 11 kills and 11 digs against Lynn.
Callie Murphy also added her second double-double in as many days with 21 assists and 13 digs.
Yanesha Johnson led with .167 attack percentage, while
Kimberly Hernandez led the defense with 15 digs.
In match two, Stephaniw Pingyin posted 23 kills in 65 attempts to lead Barton College to victory. Angelica supported the attack with 37 assists, and Laura Peed led with 18 digs.
West Alabama out-hit the Bulldogs with .212 attack percentage while Barton combined to hit .139 as a squad. Sandifer led the Tigers again in the second match, tied with Vic Collins with 12 digs each. Hernandez posted her season high of 21 digs, while
Callie Murphy totaled 34 assists.
West Alabama volleyball returns to action in the Francis Marion Tournament in Florence, S.C. on Sept. 11. The Tigers will open the tournament in a double-header starting with Mount Olive at 9 a.m. (C.S.T.) and Georgia College at 1 p.m. (C.S.T.).Â
