Valdosta State Three-Balls Thwart Tigers, 68-58

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State made more three-point baskets than regular field goals on the way to extending West Alabama's losing skid to four games by defeating the Tigers, 68-58, Monday at The Complex on the VSU campus.

The win improved Valdosta State to 8-7 overall and 4-6 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama is 5-9 and 2-8.

Twelve of Valdosta State's 23 made field goals were three pointers, while West Alabama managed to convert just 2-of-11 from long range. The Lady Blazers also outrebounded UWA 38-30.

After an Ariel Wilson layup to put UWA on top with the first basket of the game at 9:18 in the opening period, Valdosta State controlled the rest of the way. Aaliyah Cheatham hit a jumper just over a minute later to put VSU up 4-2 and the Lady Blazers never looked back.

After limiting the Tigers to just six first-quarter points, Valdosta State led 32-20 at the half and by as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter.

"Rebounding is what is killing us right now. They had 18 offensive rebounds," West Alabama coach Rusty Cram said. "And I am surprised we only got beat by 10 as bad as they beat us shooting three-pointers."

"We couldn't score threes or twos, it didn't matter," Cram said. "We continue to get behind the eight ball and have to play catch up. We seem to have one quarter where we can't get anything done. We have to figure out a way to play all four quarters."

Wilson led West Alabama scorers with 17 points despite drawing a double team throughout the game. Chloe Culpepper scored a career-high 12 points off the Tiger bench. Catherine Taylor, Sydney King and Wilson each had five rebounds for UWA.

"Chloe had her best game of the year," Cram said. "Ariel scored 17 despite the fact that she is being double teamed everywhere she goes now."

Jo Bistrow led four Valdosta State players in double figures with 19 points. Cheatham and Lydia Harvey chipped in 12, while Madi Mitchell scored 11 points. Maddy Corazza led the Lady Blazers with eight rebounds.

West Alabama returns to GSC play at West Georgia on Saturday at 1 p.m. Valdosta State is host to West Florida.
