CARROLLTON, Ga. – West Georgia had to overcome five lead changes and the score being tied six times in the second half to edged out West Alabama 65-60 in Gulf South Conference Women's Basketball action at The Coliseum on Saturday.
UWG improves to 3-14 overall and 3-8 in the GSC, while UWA drops its fifth straight game to fall to 5-10 and 2-9.
The Wolves improved to shoot 15-of-29 (51 percent) from the field in the second half after hitting 6-of-28 (21 percent) in the first half. They hit six of their eight total 3-point field goals in the second half, led by JaDechia Hill. She hit both of her 3-point attempts in the second half to finish 3-of-4 with 13 points.
Katrina Littlepage led UWG with 21 points, scoring 10 from the free throw line in 16 attempts. She finished 5-of-14 from the field. Terrianna Cave was the third Wolf to post double-digit scoring marks with 11 points, hitting 4-of-14 from the field.
The Tigers pulled ahead with a 9-0 point run in the final four minutes of the first quarter and, despite a last second layup by UWG, led 14-7 going into the second quarter.
After shooting 3-of-19 from the field in the first quarter, the Wolves responded by hitting 3-of-9, including their only two 3-point field goals of the first half, in the second. Despite the improved shooting, and outscoring the Tigers 15-9 in the second period, UWA clung to a 23-20 lead at the break.
West Georgia continued its offensive upswing in the third quarter, taking its first lead since the opening three minutes by hitting 4-of-6 of its 3-pointers and 8-of-15 from the field to claim a 43-41 lead going into the fourth quarter.
A
Latisha McCullum 3-pointer lifted the Tigers to a 47-46 lead in the first three minutes of the fourth, but 10 points in the quarter from Littlepage put West Georgia back on top once and for all. UWA cut the lead to two points in the final 13 seconds, but UWG hit six of its 12 free throws in the second half to hang on to victory. It totaled 8-of-24 from the charity stripe.
"The second quarter turned out to be a disaster for us again," said UWA head coach
Rusty Cram. "We are just frustrated from always having to battle back. We continue to not implement the things we practice into the game, and that is also frustrating. We need to continue to work on our rebounding. We are still looking for someone to step up and be that mean rebounding machine for us."
West Alabama's shooting remained consistent throughout the game, shooting 10-of-24 (41 percent) from the field in the first half and 14-of-27 (52 percent) in the second. The Tigers totaled 7-of-16 from the 3-point arc. UWG committed only seven personal fouls in the game, leaving UWA to hit only five in eight trips to the free throw line.
Ariel Wilson led the Tigers with 12 points, shooting 4-of-9 including two 3-pointers.
Sydney King and
Latisha McCullum each followed with 11 points. King totaled 5-of-7 from the field, and McCullum 4-of-5; 2-of-3 from the 3-point line.
UWA out-rebounded West Georgia 35-33, led by McCullum and
Catherine Taylor with seven each.
West Alabama women's hoops remain on the road to take on Delta State University on Thursday. The game is set for 5:30 p.m. in Cleveland, Miss.
