Rhodes, DSU Keep UWA Winless on Road Swing

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Chelsey Rhodes scored 24 points and Delta State forced 21 West Alabama turnovers as the Lady Statesmen defeated West Alabama, 62-45, in Gulf South Conference women's basketball Thursday at Sillers Coliseum.

Delta State, ranked 20th and 24th in the two NCAA Division II national polls, improved to 13-2 with the win, 10-2 in GSC play. West Alabama lost its sixth straight game and for the 10th time in 11 games. UWA has not won at Delta State since the 2005-06 season.

"We were outmanned and outgunned," West Alabama coach Rusty Cram said. "We don't have people stepping up, no one doing their job. We have to find a way to start getting the job done, but we are not going to quit."

UWA started slowly from the field, making just 3 of 11 field goals in the first quarter, but trailed by just five points at 13-8 at the end of the period. A four-minute scoring drought in the second quarter by UWA led to a double-digit DSU lead late in the quarter. In the first three quarters West Alabama had combined scoring droughts totaling just over 15 minutes.

Delta State led 32-23 at the half thanks largely to the difference in trips to the free throw line. The Lady Statesmen were 10-of-13 from the stripe into he first half. West Alabama did not attempt a free shot. UWA's first free throw attempts came at at the 9:50 mark of the third quarter when Latisha McCullum made a pair.

"What happened in the first half in regards to the free throw situation killed us," Cram said. "It was just ridiculous.

"There is a reason why Delta State is at the top of the conference," Cram said. "They know and understand what their strengths and weaknesses are and play in accordance to that. We haven't learned that yet."

West Alabama cut the Lady Statesmen lead to 12 twice in the early stages of the fourth quarter, but could get no closer with neither team shooting well from the field. UWA was 15-of-47 (31 percent) and DSU was 20-of-57 (36 percent).

Ariel Wilson scored 18 points to lead West Alabama. Catherine Taylor scored 10 and collected eight rebounds. Rhodes was the only Delta State player to score in double figures. Aspriona Gilbert had seven rebounds to lead DSU.

West Alabama ends a five-game road swing at Mississippi College Saturday. Delta State is host to West Georgia on Saturday.
