Tigers Snap Skid with Win at Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss.Catherine Taylor scored 20 points as West Alabama snapped a six-game losing skid with a 63-52 women's Gulf South Conference basketball victory over Mississippi College Saturday at A.E. Wood Coliseum.

"I know it's probably against NCAA policy, but if I had cigars I would have passed them out in the locker room," Tiger coach Rusty Cram said. "It obviously feels good to win because it's been a while, but more importantly everybody contributed and it keeps us in contention for the tournament."

West Alabama improved to 6-11 overall, 3-10 in GSC play with its first win since a 69-60 victory over Christian Brothers at home on Dec. 19. Mississippi College dropped to 5-11 and 3-10. UWA swept the two meetings with MC this season.

The Tigers and Choctaws combined to turn the ball over 48 times, but it was UWA that converted its opportunities off the miscues, scoring 30 points off MC turnovers. West Alabama also had 17 second chance points to just two for Mississippi College.

"The attitude and effort where both there today. We didn't have a bad quarter," Cram said. "Our bench destroyed their bench in the numbers. We outscored them 24-11."

Ariel Wilson scored 11 points to follow Taylor. Sydney King and Wilson had seven rebounds each for UWA, who finished with a 45-34 advantage on the boards.

Kristen Sampson scored 12 points to lead the Choctaws, followed by Chloe Roberts and Carla Clemmons with 11 apiece. Toni Woods had six rebounds for MC.

West Alabama plays a home game for the first time since Jan. 4 when North Alabama visits Pruitt Hall Gym on Thursday. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. Mississippi College is host to Christian Brothers on Thursday.
