Gunter Scores 30 as UNA Beats UWA, 73-71, in Overtime

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – KeKe Gunter scored 30 points, including a pair of free throws with 1.7 seconds left in overtime, to lead North Alabama to a 73-71 overtime win in women's Gulf South Conference basketball Thursday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The win was the second straight for the Lions, who improved to 4-15 overall and 3-11 in the GSC. West Alabama is 6-12 and 3-11.

North Alabama led for just over 31 minutes in the game, most of that in the first three quarters.  West Alabama took its first lead with 1:20 left in the third quarter on a layup by Chloe Culpepper.

With the game in the balance for the entirely of the fourth quarter, North Alabama continued to pressure the Tigers, forcing UWA to commit 30 turnovers, which ultimately proved to be the difference in the game.

"Their pressure destroyed our kids, especially the young ones," UWA coach Rusty Cram. "When you outrebound your opponent by 18, but have 30 turnovers, that means you are beating yourself.

"I said before the game I was more worried about us than UNA because of what we had seen on film and the way they play," Cram said. "When we had a chance to put it away in overtime, but they bowed up on us and we panicked."

Ariel Wilson recorded West Alabama's first double-double of the season with 23 points and 15 rebounds. The junior from Brandon, Mississippi, almost single handedly took the game to overtime by scoring UWA's last five points in regulation.

West Alabama stretched the lead to 71-64 in overtime on a pair of free throws by Catherin Taylor with 1:38 left. In the next 1:24 Katelyn Nunley scored four of her six total points for the Lions and Gunter got a basket as West Alabama turned the ball over twice in the final 10 seconds of the game to ice it away for UNA.

Taylor had 15 points for UWA, followed by Sydney King and Chloe Culpepper with 10 each. King was a rebound short of recording a double-double.

Shunice Herron chipped in 13 points for North Alabama and Alexus Patterson had 10 to round out double-figure scorers for the Lions.

West Alabama ends a mini two-game homestand by hosting Alabama Huntsville Saturday at 2 p.m. North Alabama travels to West Georgia.
