West Alabama Rally Comes Up Short at UWF

PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida held off a fourth-quarter rally by West Alabama to defeat the Tigers, 63-54, Saturday at the UWF Field House.

West Florida improved to 9-4 overall, 6-2 in Gulf South Conference play. West Alabama dipped to 5-8 and 2-7.

Trailing by 20 points after three quarters, West Alabama limited West Florida to just five points in the final 10 minutes and cut the lead to the final margin with 2:41 to play on a Sydney King layup. The Tigers turned the ball over the next three trips to end the threat.

"We came down here looking for positives to hang our hat on and I saw some today," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We played with passion down the stretch and that gave us the opportunity to get back into the game. I was pleased with that."

Ariel Wilson scored 12 points to lead West Alabama scoring. King chipped in 11 and Latisha McCullum 10 to round out double figure scorers for the Tigers. Brianna Davidson collected nine rebounds for UWA, who outrebounded West Florida 43-37.

Toni Brewer scored 14 points to lead the Argos, followed by Belle Bistrow with 13 and Katie Bobos with 11. Courtney Meyer had 11 rebounds.

West Florida scored 15 second chance points and 12 more off 18 UWA turnovers in spite of shooting just 33 percent from the floor. West Alabama shot 44 percent from the field, but managed just seven trips to the free throw line, hitting four.

The Tigers continue a five-game road swing by visiting Valdosta State Monday for a 5 p.m. tipoff. West Florida is host to West Georgia Monday.
