LIVINGSTON, Ala. – AJ Williams and Jean-Baptiste Meyniel each netted a score as West Alabama men's soccer defeated Lee University 2-1 in Gulf South Conference action at Tiger Stadium on Friday.
The Tigers improve to 8-4 overall, moving to 4-1 in league play. The Flames fall to 8-5, dropping to 3-2 in the GSC.
"It was a massive result for us," UWA head coach Matthew Thorne said. "Lee are a quality side. They moved the ball very well in their attack, and they have some brilliant players. Going up 2-0 gave us a breather, but they scored with about three minutes to go which put us under a bit of pressure at the end."
"I thought our team defended fantastically throughout the day, and when we won the ball, we played a quick counter. At the end of the day, it's a great result against a very good Lee side. We know it will be difficult on Sunday against Shorter, but we are looking forward to it, and we are ready to go."
Williams put the Tigers on the board in the eighth minute after a corner kick from Meyniel deflected off a defender, allowing the Tiger forward to place a shot into the center of the net. The score was Williams' seventh of the season.
Meyniel gave UWA a 2-0 advantage in the 59th minute, netting his second score, as well as first game-winner of the season on a free kick from 20 yards out.
Lee answered in the 87th minute as Jake Molony placed a shot throught the Tigers' back line, beating the keeper to the upper left corner to pull the Flames within one score.
Brad Louis (7-4) earned the win, tallying four saves while facing nine shots on the day. Daniel Hrenko (7-2) aloowed two goals while making four saves in the loss.
West Alabama will continue at home in a GSC match against Shorter University on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
