LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Shorter's Jordan Estio netted the game-winning goal in the 78th minute, avenging the Hawks' Gulf South Conference Tournament semifinal loss to Tigers with a 1-0 win over West Alabama men's soccer at Tiger Stadium on Sunday.
The Hawks improve to 5-5-1 on the season, moving to 4-1-1 in league play. The Tigers fall to 8-5 overall, dropping to 4-2 in the GSC.
"We're disappointed with the result," UWA head coach Matthew Thorne said. "You have to give credit to Shorter. It's a tough league, and they played extremely well to take the win on the road."
"We had some great individual performances, and had a lot of creativity with our attack. We created a few good chances at the end, but, unfortunately, we didn't get the result we wanted. Now we will shift our focus to Spring Hill on Friday."
With regulation coming to a close, Phillip Middlecamp passed the ball into the goal area from just outside of the 18-yard box. Estio brought Middlecamp's pass down and put one touch on the ball, beating the keeper to lower right corner to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead they would not surrender.
Shorter outshot West Alabama 15-9, while maintaining a 10-4 advantage in the shots-on-goal category. Clay Green and Sam Todd finished 2-of-2 with shots on target. Estio's score came on his only shot of the afternoon.
Austen Trevers (4-4-1) earned the win, making 10 saves in his second shutout of the season. Brad Louis (7-5) posted three saves on nine shots faced in the loss.
The Tigers will continue on the road, traveling to Mobile, Alabama, for a GSC contest against Spring Hill College on Friday. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
