ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of West Alabama volleyball fell to competition from the Sunshine State Conference, losing 3-0 to Nova Southeastern and 3-1 to Eckerd College at the Orlando Sports Complex in the first day of the South Region Crossover on Friday.
NSU improves to 9-7 on the season, while EC moves to 12-4 on the year. UWA drops to 12-10 following the day's action.
The Sharks completed the three-set sweep in the first match, defeating the Tigers 25-13, 25-15 and 25-11. NSU combined to hit a .316 attack percentage, while UWA finished with .011.
Yanesha Johnson led the Tiger attack, turning in eight kills in the match.
Briana Sandifer followed, picking up seven kills for UWA.
Callie Murphy led West Alabama's defensive effort, collecting 13 digs while
Abby Ames finished with 12 digs.
Tashalyn Begon totaled 10 kills on a .588 attack percentage to lead the Sharks' offense. Megan Burns recorded 14 kills, leading NSU defensively.
The Tigers found an answer to their offensive woes in the second match, taking the first set against the Tritons 25-21. However, EC responded by taking the next three sets 25-20, 25-18 and 25-22 to earn the match victory in four sets.
Johnson earned a double-double in the second match, picking up 12 kills to lead the UWA offense along with a 15-dig performance on the defensive side of the ball. Murphy continued to lead the Tigers' defensively, totaling 22 digs. Sandifer tallied 16 digs in the match, followed by Ames who finished with 15.
Lauryn Nelson collected 12 kills to lead the Triton attack, followed by Sarah Johnshoy and Mackenzie Redner each with 10 kills. Kaitlyn Sibson's 22 digs topped the EC defense. Arielle Erillo followed with 18 digs, while Madison Whiting finished with 15 digs. Gabriella Reis rounded out the Triton defensive effort with 10 digs.
West Alabama will continue in the tournament, facing off against Barry University on Saturday. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m. (CST).Â
