LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
Yanesha Johnson and
Briana Sandifer each turned in double-doubles as West Alabama volleyball erased a three-season losing skid to Alabama Huntsville, defeating the Chargers 3-1 in Gulf South Conference play at Tiger Stadium on Tuesday.
The Tigers improve to 13-11 on the year, moving to 6-6 in league action. The Chargers fall to 14-8 overall, dropping to 7-5 in the GSC.
"We made a lot of changes as far as moving players around on the court," UWA head coach
Alexis Meeks said. "Although we looked a little shaky at times, we kept moving forward and found a way to fight back."
"Our defense made great plays to keep rallies going, and that really gave us the momentum to climb out of several ruts. We kept them off-balance with our attack by varying our look and utilizing players in different roles. I think this will really boost our confidence moving forward."
UWA started off in a hole, trailing 18-12 in the first set before going on a 14-6 run to close out the set with a 26-24 victory. The Tigers dominated set two, outhitting the Chargers .146 to -.027 and building an 18-5 lead. West Alabama held off a late UAH rally, winning the set 25-18 to grab a 2-0 advantage.
Alabama Huntsville found an answer in the third set, playing point-for-point with UWA and tying the match at 24-24. A Charger kill and a Tiger attack error gave UAH a 26-24 win to pull within one set.
UWA sealed the conference victory, taking control on the fourth lead change of the set on its way to a 25-20 win in the fourth set.
Johnson led the Tiger attack with 24 kills, while Sandifer followed with 19 kills on a .256 attack percentage. Johnson and
Abby Ames combined for 40 digs with each player collecting 20 on the night, and Sandifer finished with 14 digs and two solo blocks for the Tiger defense.
Anna Claire Johnson tallied 12 kills, and Anna LeDuc totaled 11 to emerge as UAH's offensive leaders. Kristen Giles led the Charger defensive effort with 14 digs, followed by Haley Hop with 13.
The Tigers will continue on a four-match road stretch, beginning with a GSC contest against Valdosta State on Friday. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
