West Alabama Shuts Out Delta State

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Five different Tigers recorded goals as West Alabama men's soccer grabbed its first Gulf South Conference win, shutting out Delta State 5-0 at Tiger Stadium on Sunday.

The Tigers improve to 5-4 on the season, moving to 1-1 in conference play. The Statesmen fall to 3-6 overall, dropping to 1-4 in the GSC.

"It's great to bounce back and grab our first conference win after that unlucky defeat on Friday," UWA head coach Matthew Thorne said. "It was a tight game at 2-0, and there were moments where Delta had chances to come back."

"Delta State are great side that have beaten very good teams, so we are happy with the result. That was our first clean sheet and an excellent defensive performance. On the other end of it, we created lots of chances and came away with five goals. We are going to enjoy this win and get focused for Christian Brothers on Friday."

The Tigers opened up the scoring early after AJ Williams was awarded a penalty kick in the 4th minute. Williams attempt found the back of the net for the UWA forward's fifth score of the year.

Two minutes later, Liam Ireland hit Harrison Roberts with a pass to the center of the field. Roberts took the shot from 28 yards out, beating the keeper to the top left corner to give West Alabama a 2-0 advantage in the 6th minute.

A seventy-six-minute defensive battle came to end as Quentin Le Cornet connected with Ireland on a through ball to the center of the pitch. Ireland beat a defender and took a one-on-one shot, netting his second score of the season in the 82nd minute.

Ireland drew a foul to set up a free kick opportunity in the 83rd minute. Alvaro Macias took the shot, placing the ball just out of the keeper's reach as it hit the crossbar and bounced into the net to put the Tigers up 4-0.

West Alabama took a final 5-0 lead in the 85th minute as Oreva Amata dribbled the ball from the right side of the penalty area and passed to Clay Green directly in front on the net. Green slid in to finish the ball from one yard out, recording his fourth score of the season.

Brad Louis (4-4) earned the win, making five saves in his first shutout performance on the year. Matthew Klinck (1-2) surrendered five goals while making four saves in the loss.

The Tigers will continue on the road, facing off against GSC-foe Christian Brothers on Friday. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
