LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Alabama Huntville's Corentin Diverres two scores lifted the Chargers to a 2-0 Gulf South Conference men's soccer victory over West Alabama in the the Tigers' final regular-season match at Tiger Stadium on Friday.
The Chargers improve to 5-9-1 overall, moving to 4-4-1 in league play. The Tigers fall to 9-6-1 on the season, dropping to 5-3-1 in the conference.
"We started off really slow in the first half," UWA head coach
Matthew Thorne said. "Give it to UAH. They came out guns blazing and sored a very early goal."
"We came back in the second half and created a lot of chances, but they just weren't efficient enough. UAH took advantage of a set piece, and their keeper made a fantastic save to stop Clay's penalty kick. Now we need to bounce back from this and put all of our focus toward Lee on Tuesday to try to get the best result possible."
Diverres gave the Chargers a 1-0 advantage in the second minute of the match, hitting the back of the net thanks to an assist from Daniel Buchanan.
After a scoreless 75 minutes, Diverres netted his second score of the night, finishing off a corner kick from Hermann Bjornsson to put UAH ahead 2-0 in the 77
th minute.
The Tigers were awarded a penalty kick in the 87
th minute, but
Clay Green's attempt was saved by Gabriel Chilas, dampening UWA's hopes to net a late equalizer.
Chilas (2-0-1) made five saves on nine shots faced in his second shutout victory of the season.
Brad Louis (9-6-1) recorded a season-high nine saves in the loss.
The Tigers will take on the No. 5 seed, Lee University, in the first round of the GSC Tournament at Tiger Stadium on Tuesday.
