Clemson Tops UWA, 80-48, in Women’s Exhibition Basketball

CLEMSON, S.C. –  Clemson had four starters score in double figures as the Tigers scored an 80-48 women's college basketball exhibition victory over West Alabama Sunday at Littlejohn Coliseum.
 
The action was the first against outside competition for both teams. West Alabama continues its exhibition schedule by visiting Coleman Coliseum to face Alabama Friday at 7 p.m. Clemson will host North Greenville on Sunday in its final exhibition game.
 
Danielle Edwards led Clemson with 18 points, followed by Ivy Atkism with 14. Nelly Perry and Alexis Carter chipped in 12 points each. Jaia Alexander collected 10 rebounds and Perry nine more for Clemson.
 
Clemson scored 24 points off 23 West Alabama turnovers and dominated the inside, outscoring UWA 40-12 in the paint. West Alabama failed to pick up a fast break point while allowing a dozen to Clemson.
 
Clemson used a 21-4 second-quarter run to stretch a seven-point first quarter lead to a 42-24 advantage by halftime.
 
West Alabama did not score for 7:27 to start the third quarter, with the first UWA points coming on a pair of free throws by Catherine Taylor at the 2:33 mark. The first field goal of the second half came 22 seconds later by Ariel Wilson. From that point on, UWA scored nine more third quarter points to trail 60-37 after 30 minutes.
 
Catherine Taylor was the only West Alabama player to score in double figures, finishing with 13 points.
 
West Alabama shot 29 percent from the floor, making 16-of-55 field goal attempts. Clemson was 30-of-66 for 45 percent. Clemson outrebounded UWA 44-36.
