LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama snapped a three-game skid, sweeping Union University in three straight sets (25-14, 25-13 and 29-27) in Gulf South Conference volleyball action at Pruitt Hall on Friday.
The Tigers improve to 11-7 overall, moving to 4-5 in GSC play. The Bulldogs fall to 6-11, dropping to 3-6 in the league.
"There will always be sets and matches where you really have to fight, and tonight it was the third set," UWA head coach
Alexis Meeks said. "Union picked up their offense, and we found ourselves out of position a lot."
"Falling out of system like that disallowed some of our hitters to be as successful as they were in the first and second sets. We brought in
Taylor Donato, who is an excellent out-of-system hitter, and her ability to place shots down the line is what worked for us tonight.
Yanesha Johnson brought some great energy and rallied everyone around the game plan."
West Alabama dominated the first two sets, outhitting Union .455 to .115 in set one and .227 to -.095 in set two. However, the Tigers had to come from behind to complete the sweep.
Trailing 16-7,
Taylor Donato entered the game, making an immediate impact with a kill that sparked a Tiger rally. UWA went on an 11-2 run, tying the third set at 18 apiece following another Donato kill.
With the set tied at 24-all, the Tigers and Bulldogs traded points until a kill from
Yanesha Johnson and a Union attack error gave UWA a 29-27 set victory, securing the 3-0 conference win for UWA.
Johnson led the Tigers' attack, recording 17 kills with a .455 hitting percentage and added four service aces in the match. Donato finished with five kills in one set on the court.
Briana Sandifer and
Callie Murphy led the UWA defense, each with seven digs. Johnson and Jamie Lancellot each tallied two solo blocks for UWA.
Katie O'Malley picked up 10 kills to lead the Bulldogs offensively. Audrey Cagle turned in 12 digs, leading the Union defense.
The Tigers will return to action, facing off against Christian Brothers in GSC action on Saturday. First serve is set for 9 a.m.
