Tigers Go to 3-1 in GSC Play in Shootout Win Over Delta State

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama head football coach Brett Gilliland felt like it would take at least 50 points to beat Delta State on Homecoming Saturday at Tiger Stadium.

His Tigers responded and UWA outlasted the Statesmen, 54-42, in a game where the two teams combined for 1,078 total yards. West Alabama piled up 566 yards and Delta State 512.

UWA evened its record at 3-3 and improved to 3-1 in GSC play. Delta State is also 3-3, 2-2 in the league. The win gives West Alabama four wins in the last five meetings between the Tigers and Statesmen.

"Our guys fought hard," Gilliland said. "Delta State is a dynamic team and we did enough to win. That what this series has become lately.

"We were able to get in a rhythm early and once we established the ability to run the ball it opened it up for the passing game," Gilliland said. "That's a high-powered offense that Delta State has, so we knew we needed to take advantage of every opportunity."

West Alabama jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first nine minutes of the game and never trailed. The Tigers led 38-21 at the half and then held off a late Delta State rally for the win.

UWA quarterback Austin Grammer ran for three touchdowns in the first quarter. His scoring runs were 19, 1 and 15 yards. He also connected with Corey Davis on a 13-yard scoring pass on the second play of the fourth quarter.

"Scoring 54 is hard to do, but the guys made plays and when you are throwing to guys like Donta (Armstrong) and Corey (Davis) it makes it easy for me," Grammer said. "The defense got the turnovers when we needed them. This team is getting better and it's been fun to watch us grow up."

A senior from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Grammer has now accounted for nine touchdowns over the last two games. After throwing for five scores last week at Shorter he completed 22-of-39 for 289 yards and ran for 45 more against Delta State.

Rashaad Lee scored on runs of 11 and 2 yards, but it was Lakendric Thomas who carried the rushing load for West Alabama, finishing with 150 yards on 19 carries.

Jordan Bennett connected on four field goals to round out West Alabama scoring. The Tigers had two touchdowns called back for penalties.

West Alabama limited the GSC's leading rusher Chris Robinson to just 25 yards on 11 carries, but quarterback Tyler Sullivan completed 27-of-37 passes for 382 yards and four touchdowns.
West Alabama defenders were able to intercept Sullivan three times and backup Jabe Burgess once to stop drives or set up scoring opportunities.

Se'Quan Steele had his first interception of the year, as did Terry Samuel and Taderion Myhand. Tavarious Hutchinson picked off his second. Jordan Jones also returned a fumble 15 yards. Steele and Qyen Griffin led the Tigers with six tackles each. Darius Ellis recorded his fifth sack of the season and the Tigers recorded nine tackles for loss.

"I have had a horrible taste in my mouth since the loss to North Alabama, even though we won last week," offensive tackle Xavier Hemingway said. "Our goal tonight was to score as many points as it would take."

Davis caught eight passes for 71 yards to lead West Alabama. Armstrong had five receptions for 82 yards.

With the UWA defense stifling Robinson on running plays, the Statesmen got him the ball through the air via eight receptions for 175 yards and two touchdowns. K'Shun Evans and Alex Pina-Rhoden both had eight catches for the Statesmen for 91 and 70 yards, respectively.

West Alabama returns to the road to play West Georgia on Saturday. Delta State is host to West Florida.
