Badgers Hold Off UWA for 55-54 Win

MOBILE, Ala. – Spring Hill withstood a furious West Alabama rally in the fourth quarter to sneak out of the Arthur Outlaw Recreation Center with a 55-54 women's college basketball win over West Alabama Friday in the season opener for both teams.

Down 55-45 with 7:44 left in the game, West Alabama climbed back into the game by holding the Badgers scoreless the rest of the way. The Tigers cut the Spring Hill lead to the final 55-54 margin on a layup by Ariel Wilson with 1:27 to play.

West Alabama had the ball with a chance to win, but Wilson's layup was blocked out of bounds by Leah Washington with 1.8 seconds left. Camry Johnson then stole the Tigers' inbound pass to seal the win for Spring Hill.

Both teams began the game on fire from the floor. Seven players scored in the first quarter as West Alabama converted 9-of-10 from the field to lead 21-17 after 10 minutes. The Tigers and Badgers combined to start 9-of-9 from the field, with neither team missing a shot until 5:06 in the first period.

Tied at 33 at halftime, both teams cooled considerably in the second quarter, with West Alabama converting 4-of-11 from the floor and Spring Hill just 5-of-16.

Spring Hill put together a 13-0 run over the last 4:07 of the third quarter to take a 52-43 lead with 10 minutes to play. The Tiger scoring drought lasted 6:32, snapped by a Catherine Taylor layup with 6:32 left to play, cutting the Badger lead to 53-45.

Kierra Groce scored 13 points to lead three West Alabama scorers in double figures. Chloe Culpepper chipped in 12 and Wilson finished with 10 for UWA, who ended up shooting 61 percent (21-of-45) from the floor. Culpepper had seven rebounds for UWA.

Elise Reilly scored a game-high 19 points to lead Spring Hill. Washington chipped in 14 and seven rebounds. Johnson had nine rebounds for the Badgers, who barely edged the Tigers 31-20 on the glass.

Despite the fast start, Spring Hill ended up shooting just 38 percent (21-55) from the floor, but picked up 25 points off 25 West Alabama turnovers.

The Tigers and Badgers play again Saturday, Nov. 19 at Pruitt Hall on the UWA campus.
