North Alabama Hangs on for 67-61 Win Over West Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. – North Alabama held off a late West Alabama rally to secure a 67-61 Gulf South Conference men's basketball victory over the Tigers Thursday at Flowers Hall.

Even though the Lions attempted 25 three pointers and made just six, those buckets from behind the arc proved to be the final margin of victory for North Alabama (6-2, 1-1).

After shooting 1-for-10 to open the game, West Alabama (4-3, 0-2) made 20-of-39 the rest of the way to cut what was a 12-point Lion lead with 5:30 left in the game to 65-61 with 28 seconds left on a Jahmal Lane layup.

"We gave up 44 points in the second half. We can't do that," UWA coach Allen Sharpe said. "We can't allow that many points in any half and our guard play has to get better. We should be shooting a lot more free throws."

Both teams shot 21 free throws, with West Alabama making 18 and UNA 16. The Tigers outrebounded the Lions 36-29.

Both Lane and Gavin Robinson recorded double-doubles for West Alabama, with Lane getting 19 points and 10 rebounds. Robinson had 18 points and 12 boards. Johnny Stallworth chipped in 10 points for UWA.

"It looks good to get that double-double, but who cares if you don't win the game," Sharpe said. "There is an old saying that says you were just good enough to get beat. Years from now they won't ask who got a double-double, but they will ask who won."

Dimario Jackson scored 18 points to lead North Alabama, followed by Johnell Ginnie with 12 and Austin Timms with 11. Sharwyn McGee had seven rebounds.

West Alabama plays its final game prior to Christmas Saturday at Alabama Huntsville. North Alabama is host to West Georgia on Monday.
