Shorter Inside Play Too Much for UWA Women

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Taylor Adams scored 30 points and collected 12 rebounds to lead Shorter to a 74-62 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over West Alabama Saturday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The win was the fifth consecutive for Shorter over West Alabama and improved the Hawks to 4-5 overall, 3-1 in GSC play, this season. West Alabama dropped to 4-7 and 1-3.

The leading scorer in the GSC, Adams converted 9-of-19 from the floor and 11-of-15 from the free throw line. For good measure, the senior From Scottsboro, Alabama had seven steals and four assists from her post position. Saturday was the fourth time Adams has scored at least 30 points this season.

"We are just not very good inside and they were too much for us in there, evidenced by the fact that their post scored 30 on us," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "Give them credit, they made people try to beat them who aren't able to do that yet."

Shorter led by 10 points with 6:06 left in the third quarter, but West Alabama held the Hawks without a field goal for the last 7:23 of the period to trail just 55-54 going into the final quarter. Shorter outscored the Tigers 19-8 down the stretch to seal the win.

Kayla Tillie and Domonique Clune chipped in 14 points each for the Hawks, who shot 52 percent (26-for-50) from the floor. Shorter outscored UWA 24-12 in the paint.

Ariel Wilson led UWA scoring with 16 points, followed by Catherine Taylor with 12. Sydney King had seven rebounds for the Tigers, who outrebounded Shorter 32-30.

"We played some pretty good basketball for 32 of 40 minutes, but when we had to sub we lost continuity," Cram said. "We just have to keep plugging and turn the corner somewhere."

West Alabama is host to Lee (8-2, 3-1) at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Shorter plays at West Georgia on Monday.
