Lee Defeats UWA, 67-56, in GSC Women’s Basketball

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Erin Walsh scored 28 points and Anna Woodford contributed a double-double as Lee University defeated West Alabama, 67-56, in Gulf South Conference women's basketball Monday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

Lee improved to 9-2, 4-1 in the GSC, with the win. West Alabama lost for the third straight game and dipped to 4-8 and 1-4. The Lady Flames have beaten UWA six times in the last seven meetings.

"We had only one or two players who played hard today and Ariel Wilson was the only one who hard and smart," UWA coach Rusty Cram said. "We are just not mentally tough and it's our job as coaches to fix that."

Wilson led all scorers with 21 points and was the only West Alabama player in double figures. Wilson made 9-of-18 field goal attempts and led the team with five assists. Sydney King came off the bench to score eight and grab six rebounds.

Walsh converted 7-of-15 from the floor, 4-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc. Woodford scored 10 points and collected 10 rebounds.

Lee led 40-30 at the half, but West Alabama cut the lead to six points at 49-43 after the third quarter, but the Lady Flames led for almost 38 minutes over the course of the game.  Lee outrebounded the Tigers 44-39.

"About four or five times we cut the lead to six or seven points, then we don't make shots," Cram said. "After Ariel we didn't have anyone who wanted to score."

West Alabama opens a brief two-game GSC road swing at Mississippi College (3-5, 1-4) on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
