Homers and Jorge Lift Tigers to 6-0 Win in Home Opener

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama hit three home runs and starting pitcher Jorge Cruz worked seven strong innings as the Tigers won their baseball home opener, 6-0, over East Central (Okla.) Thursday at Tartt Field.

The win was the third straight for West Alabama (3-1). East Central's losing streak to open the season extended to six games.

"We had some good at bats, but we also had some that weren't exactly what we try to do," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "Still, it's early in the season. The key today was definitely the long balls.

"Jack Cockrum got us going early, Adam Chamblee had a real good swing on the ball he hit out and Mitch Holgate hooked one around the left field foul pole," Rundles said." We just don't need to get into depending on long balls to score."

Cockrum got West Alabama on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run home run over the wall in right field, chasing Davis Aiken who had reached on a bunt single. Cockrum was one of two Tigers to finish with two hits. He also drove in three runs. Dylan Little also had a pair of hits.

The Tigers added another run in the second inning when Cockrum singled in Dylan Little, who had singled to start the inning and moved to second on an ECU throwing error.

Chamblee and Holgate continued the Tiger home run parade, with a two-run blast by Chamblee in the fifth inning and a solo shot by Holgate to lead off the sixth. All the homers were the first of the season for Cockrum, Chamblee and Holgate.

Cruz (1-0) worked seven innings of three-hit baseball for the win, walking one and striking out six. Brady Badon finished up for UWA, keeping the shutout intact for the final two innings, allowing one hit and striking out three.

"Jorge battled early," Rundles said, "but by the third inning he settled in, and from the third to the seventh we saw the Jorge Cruz we expect to see."

ECU starter Dylan Sanchez (0-2) absorbed the loss, allowing seven hits and five earned runs through 4.2 innings pitched. The East Central offense managed just four singles.

The same two teams play the second game of the four-game series Friday at Tartt Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
