Big Inning Lifts Stillman Past 7th Ranked UWA, 8-3

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Stillman scored seven runs in the sixth inning on the way to an 8-3 college baseball victory over No. 7 West Alabama Wednesday at Tartt Field.

The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for Stillman (2-7). West Alabama (6-2) had its win streak snapped at six games.

"It's obvious we weren't ready to play and that's on me as a head coach," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "Stillman came out aggressive and ready to go, so give them credit. That said, I still have to have our guys ready to play and I did not."

West Alabama scored single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead while the first three of six Tiger pitchers retired the first 15 Stillman batters in order. Nick Delgado drove in Mitch Holgate for both of those runs with a pair of singles.

Stillman strung together six singles in the big seventh inning, but the big blow was a three-run home run by Nick Vitale that chased UWA reliever and losing pitcher David Cromer (0-1).

Stillman relief man Kewayne McCray (1-1) picked up the win. The third of five SC pitchers, McCray faced 11 hitters over 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and no runs while striking out two and walking one.

Stillman tacked on one more run in the eighth inning when Josh McDaniel singled with one out and then scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Hank Parker.

West Alabama made a little noise in the bottom of the ninth, scoring a run on three singles, with Jake Bush driving in the run with a two-out single to right field. UWA left the bases full in the ninth and left 13 runners stranded in the game.

Delgado had three hits to lead UWA. Luigi Mendez and Dylan Little each had a pair of hits.

Vitale, Dalton Reach and Carlos Guzman each had two hits for Stillman.

West Alabama opens an eight-game road swing with a three-game Gulf South Conference series at Delta State this weekend. Stillman travels to Boca Raton, Florida to face Lynn University in a three-game series.
