MONTEVALLO, Ala. –
Davis Aiken and
Adam Chamblee combined for six hits and seven runs batted in as West Alabama outlasted Montevallo, 17-10, in college baseball action Wednesday at Kermit A. Johnson Field.
West Alabama improved to 8-4 and returns to Gulf South Conference play Saturday with a doubleheader at Mississippi College. Montevallo dropped to 7-5.
Taylor Walker hit a three-run home run, his sixth of the season, in the bottom of the first inning to stake Montevallo to an early lead, but UWA rallied for seven runs in the top of the second and never trailed again.
The Tigers used five hits, a Falcon error, a hit batter and a walk to spur the big inning.
Mitch Holgate,
Jack Cockrum and
Dylan Little all doubled in runs in the frame. UWA added another in the top of the third to stretch the lead to 8-3.
Aiken and Cockrum hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the fourth inning to put the Tigers up 10-2. Chamblee hit hit a two-run homer in the fifth, his fourth of the season, to increase West Alabama's lead to 12-3.
Chamblee drove in his fourth run of the day with a single in the top of the sixth inning to make it 13-3 West Alabama, but Montevallo answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The big blow of the inning for UM was a two-run double from Chase Bryant.
West Alabama scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to go up 15-7. An RBI double by
Luigi Mendez and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Aiken accounted for the scoring. Montevallo used three West Alabama errors in the bottom of the inning to score three runs and cut the lead to 15-10.
Mendez drove in two runs with a singe to left field in the top of the ninth inning to extend the West Alabama lead to the final margin.
UWA starter
Josh Jones (2-0) worked 5.2 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out nine and walking two. Montevallo starter Landon Smith (1-1) took the loss after allowing 10 runs, nine earned, on eight hits over three innings.
Both Aiken and Chamblee had three hits, with Aiken driving in three and Chamblee four runs. Aiken's homer was his first. Cockrum's was his second. Mendez, Little and Cockrum all had two hits apiece.
Walker had three of Montevallo's 13 hits. Daniel Pardo, Dane Hutcheson, Chad Wagner and Collin Dupree had two hits each for the Falcons.
