No. 7 UWA Splits GSC Doubleheader at Delta State

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Seventh-ranked West Alabama came from five runs down to win the first game, 13-11, and Delta State got a walk-off single to win game two, 1-0, as the Statesmen and Tigers split a Gulf South Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday at Harvey Stadium.

West Alabama (7-3, 1-1) and Delta State (6-4, 1-1) finish the series with a single game Sunday. First pitch is set for noon.

Jake Bush had three hits for UWA in the first game and Mitch Holgate hit his second home run of the season as the Tigers pounded out 14 hits. Holgate, who also had two hits in the opener, drove in three runs. Marcus Morrisette, Dylan Little and Adam Chamblee had two each each for the Tigers. Bush and Nick Delgado added triples to Holgate's homer.

After getting down 9-4, UWA scored nine runs over the final four innings to earn the win in the first game. The Tigers left 12 runners on base in the first game and 20 in the two games.

Jonathan Porter (2-1) picked up the win in relief in game one. Austin Sanders earned his third save. Bryant Johnston (1-2) was charged with the loss in relief.

"We had some really good swings in the first game, kept competing and battled back for a great win," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "It was starting to look like whoever had the last at bat would win, but Austin Sanders took care of business."

Colton Welch had a one-out pinch hit single in the bottom of the seventh inning to plate pinch runner Austin McClain on a bang-bang play at home plate for the game-winner in the second game.

"(Catcher) Jack (Cockrum) made a great play at the plate on that last play. I guess the umpire thought the runner slid under the tag," Rundles said. "Evan Miller pitched well. I probably left him in there for one batter too long."

West Alabama managed just six hits against Statesman starter and winner Tre Hobbs (3-0) in the nightcap. Evan Miller (0-1) was the hard-luck loser after allowing one run on five hits and striking out six through 6.1 innings.

Erick Santiago had two hits for the Statesmen in the second game. Brandon Cummins and Will Robertson had two hits each for DSU in the opener. Trent Giambrone and Ben Pickard both hit their second homers of the year in game one.

Sunday's game will be broadcast live on ESPN 104.9 in the Twin States and globally on the ESPN 1049 App.
