No. 22 West Alabama Sweeps GSC Doubleheader at MC

CLINTON, Miss. – Mitch Holgate got six hits and Evan Anderson earned a complete-game win in the nightcap as No. 22 West Alabama swept Mississippi College in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at Frierson Field. The Tigers won the first game, 10-5, and the second, 4-2.

"I thought we were in control in the first game from start to finish and Mitch Holgate had a Mitch Holgate type day over both games," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "Evan pitched really well, not giving them anything and making them earn everything they got."

Holgate was 6-for-9 in the doubleheader with a home run and a double. His homer was a two-run shot in the opener, giving him four on the season. Jack Cockrum, Davis Aiken and Marcus Morrisette also homered for the Tigers in the two games.

"I am anxious to see how we react on Sunday," Rundles said. "Will we be content with getting two wins today and shut it down, or will we be focused enough to earn a sweep and be back in the hunt?"

West Alabama improved to 10-4 with the sweep, 3-2 in GSC play. Mississippi College is 6-6 and 1-4. The Tigers and Choctaws play game three of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.

Morrisette's homer in the first game was his first of the season and was the highlight of a three-hit day. Cockrum also had three hits in the doubleheader for UWA, as did Dylan Little and Adam Chamblee.

Cockrum and Aiken's home runs accounted for all of UWA's scoring in the second game. After the Choctaws had taken an early 1-0 lead, Cockrum's solo blast over the wall in right field tied the game in the top of the third inning. MC led 2-1 when Aiken's three-run blast, also to right, provided the UWA margin of victory.

Anderson (3-1) did not walk a batter while striking out nine and scattering eight hits in the nightcap. The junior from McCloud, Oklahoma sat down 10 of the last 11 Mississippi College batters he faced.

Jonathan Porter (3-1) earned the win in the first game in relief of starter Jorge Cruz. Porter allowed a run and two hits while striking out two in five innings pitched.

"We had been struggling in that fifth, sixth, seventh inning stretch with our relievers and Porter gave us what we have been looking for there," Rundles said. "Even though we are still leaving too many runners on base, we still got hits when we needed them."

Choctaw starters Jake Fraze (2-1) and Taylor Olsen (0-1) were tagged with the losses. Logan Ferrell, Hunter Bolin, and Chance Whitten all had three hits for Mississippi College.
