Palm Beach Atlantic Spoils UWA Baseball Opener

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Julian Bilodeau had three hits and drove in a run as Palm Beach Atlantic upset No. 8 West Alabama, 2-1, Friday at Rubin Park in the first game of a three-game series between the Tigers and the Sailfish.

Palm Beach Atlantic (3-2) extended its winning streak to three games. The game was the season opener for West Alabama (0-1). The Tigers and Sailfish play at doubleheader Saturday with game one starting at 11 a.m. CST.

"We are obviously disappointed," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "There were a couple of things here or there that we should have done better, but I believe we are a lot further along than we were at this time last year."

"There is a lot of baseball left to be played," Rundles said. "All this means is we aren't going undefeated."

Palm Beach Atlantic scored a single run in the first inning when Jake Summey walked, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Peter Rivera.

West Alabama answered with a run on three hits in the third inning. Davis Aiken singled with one out, moved to third on a single by Jack Cockrum and then scored on a two-out triple by Mitch Holgate, who had three hits and stole a base.

Palm Beach Atlantic scored the game winner, an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Bilodeau doubled in Andrew Calderone after a Tiger throwing error extended the inning.

Sailfish starter Kyle Polaski (1-1) worked six-plus innings for the pitching win. Polaski allowed a run on six hits while walking one and striking out four. Dominic Monda earned his first save by working the final three frames, not allowing a run and striking out five.

Tiger reliever Jonathan Porter (0-1) gave up an unearned run in the sixth to absorb the Tiger loss. Porter worked 2.1 innings, striking out two and walking one. UWA starter Jorge Cruz went five innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out five and walking two. Brandon Pennington struck out the only two batters he faced in the eighth inning.

West Alabama rapped out 10 hits, but left eight on base and made three outs on the base paths. Aiken and Nick Delgado had two hits each for UWA.

Bilodeau was the only Sailfish with more than one hit.
