No. 8 UWA Sweeps Doubleheader at Palm Beach Atlantic

WEST PLAM BEACH, Fla. – Seven West Alabama pitchers combined to allow just three runs in 18 innings as the No. 8 Tigers swept a doubleheader from Palm Beach Atlantic, 13-1 and 7-2, Saturday at Rubin Park

The sweep handed UWA (2-1) a win in the three-game series with the Sailfish of the Sunshine States Conference. PBA (3-4) had its win streak stopped at three games.

"We pitched well today, and in the series for that matter," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "We pitched ourselves into some trouble but turned around and pitched out of it."

Left-handed starters Josh Jones (1-0) and Evan Anderson (1-0) both worked six innings to pick up the wins. Palm Beach starters Phil DiLandro (0-1) and Tyler Hawks (0-1) absorbed the losses.

Jones allowed just one hit, and it didn't come until the sixth inning, while not allowing a run, striking out three and walking one. He sat down 12 straight PBA hitters at one point. Anderson scattered six hits and gave up one run. He struck out thee and walked two while retiring eight consecutive Sailfish in the third through fifth innings.

West Alabama relievers Evan Miller, David Cromer, Brady Badon, Brandon Pennington and Austin Sanders allowed just two runs on four hits over 5.2 innings pitched in the two games.

Tiger pitchers had plenty of support from the plate. West Alabama used 22 hits to score 20 runs in the doubleheader. Center fielder Nick Delgado went 5-for-8 in the two games and scored three runs. PBA was forced to use eight relief pitchers in the doubleheader.

Delgado emerged from the three-game series batting .636 and third baseman Mitch Holgate went 5-for-10 (.500) in the three games at Rubin Park. Shortstop Dylan Little had a pair of doubles and a sacrifice fly in the doubleheader to drive in four runs.

West Alabama's runs came in bunches all day. The Tigers exploded for four runs in the second inning, six in the fifth and three more in the sixth to cruise to the game one victory. Adam Chamblee had a double and drove in three runs, while Luigi Mendez and Jack Cockrum both ripped two-run doubles.

Tied 1-1 in the nightcap, West Alabama scored four runs in the sixth inning to effectively put that game away. Back-to-back doubles by Holgate and Delgado started the rally before Josh Winningham drove in a run with a ground ball to first and Little's sac fly.

"We took advantage of scoring situations today," Rundles said. "We got big hits when we needed them."

An RBI double by Cockrum, who later scored on a wild pitch, plated the final two runs for West Alabama in the ninth inning of the second game.

Mac Hessney had three hits for Palm Beach Atlantic in the second game. Both Sailfish runs in the second game were scored via sacrifice flies.

West Alabama opens the home portion of the 2016 schedule Thursday with the first of a four-game series against East Central (Okla.) University. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Tartt Field.
