UWA Baseball Extends Win Streak to 11 Games

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama extended its baseball winning streak to 11 games by sweeping Christian Brothers, 6-2 and 7-4, in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Sunday at Tartt Field.

Ranked No. 7 nationally, the Tigers improved to 18-4 overall and 9-2 in GSC play. Christian Brothers is 5-16 and 0-11. UWA and CBU conclude the three-game set with a single game Monday at 2 p.m.

"I'm proud of our guys for gutting it up because I know a lot of them do not feel 100 percent," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "We did what we needed to do to win two games. At the end of the year they aren't going to ask the score, but they will ask if you won."

Evan Miller went eight innings to earn the pitching win in game one, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out six and walking one. Reliever Jonathan Porter (5-1) picked up the win in game two in relief of starter Anthony Rosati, striking out one in two innings pitched. Austin Sanders earned his fourth save by getting the final three outs in the nightcap.

Christian Brothers starters Jack Parker (1-4) and Peyton Sanderlin (1-5) were tagged with the losses.

A four-run seventh inning proved to be the difference for West Alabama in the opener, with Nick Delgado and Luigi Mendez driving in runs with RBI singles.

Mitch Holgate hit his seventh home run, a solo shot to center field, in the third inning of game one. In the two games Holgate got three hits, scored five runs, stole two bases and was hit by a pitch.

"Mitch is the catalyst for this team. When he does his thing it makes everything else a little easier," Rundles said. "I would say his years here are proving to be a pretty good marriage."

A two-run homer by Lucas Castleberry, his first of the year, plated the only two CBU runs in the first game. CBU managed just five hits in the second game but took advantage of three UWA errors to score three unearned runs.

Josh Winningham had three hits, including a double, in the nightcap for UWA. Jake Bush had a single and drove in two runs in the second game, extending his reached base streak to 22 games. Dylan Little had a pair of hits for the Tigers as well.
