UWA, UNA Split GSC Doubleheader, Tiger Win Streak Stops at 14

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama used five home runs to win the first game and two North Alabama pitchers coaxed 11 infield pop-ups in game two as the Tigers and Lions split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at Tartt Field.

No. 6 West Alabama won the opener, 8-6, and North Alabama took the nightcap, 6-3, to stop UWA's win streak at 14 games. The Tigers are 20-5 overall, 11-3 in GSC play. UNA is 15-8 and 8-6.

"We got a split and come into tomorrow with an opportunity to win the series and start a new streak," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "We are going to have to have better approaches at the plate to make that happen though."

Jack Cockrum had a pair of solo homers in the first game, giving him seven for the year. Jake Bush hit is third, also a solo shot, while Mitch Holgate had a two-run homer, his eighth.

The fifth UWA homer, Dylan Little's three-run shot over the wall in right field, proved to be the game winner for the Tigers. Little's first home run snapped a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning.

Kyle Hubbuch had a solo homer for North Alabama in game one, while Kevin Hall hit two homers in the nightcap, driving in three runs. Hall's home runs were his third and fourth of the year. Hubbuch's was his eighth.

UNA starter Brad Bailey and reliever Blake Talley limited West Alabama to just four hits in the night game, inducing 11 infield pop flies. Bailey (2-0) was the winner and Talley earned his second save. UWA starter Anthony Rosati (1-1) took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out eight.

"They outplayed us in the second game and I think we let the hope of the long ball interfere with our plate approaches in the second game," Rundles said. "That might have more to do with that left-hander (Bailey) than anything. He pitched well."

Tiger middle reliever Jonathan Porter (6-1) pitched two innings in relief of starter Evan Miller to pick up the win in the first game. Despite a shaky outing Austin Sanders earned his fifth save. UNA starter Riley Sanderson (4-2) took the opening loss, allowing seven runs on 11 hits.

Taylor Hayes had five hits in the doubleheader for North Alabama and Lion's leadoff man Dylan Calhoun had four.

Bush and Holgate had four hits each in the two games for UWA. In addition to the home runs, Bush had a pair of doubles and Holgate belted his fourth triple of the season. Bush and Little each drove in three runs.

The Tigers and Lions play the rubber game of the series Sunday at Tartt Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
