UWA Clinched GSC Series With 8-4 Win Over UNA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Evan Anderson struck out 13 and Jake Bush drove in three runs with a pair of doubles as West Alabama beat North Alabama, 8-4, in a Gulf South Conference baseball game Sunday at Tartt Field.

The sixth-ranked Tigers are 22-5 overall and 13-2 in GSC play, good enough for a two-game cushion at the top of the league standings. The Lions dropped to 15-9 and 8-7.

West Alabama jumped to a quick 1-0 lead when Jack Cockrum singled in the first inning and scored later on a wild pitch, but UNA took a 4-1 lead with one swing of Taylor Hayes' bat in the third. Hayes' grand slam was his fifth homer of the year.

"Evan had that one hiccup in the third on the grand slam, but after that he did a great job coming back and putting up zeroes," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "We were a little better offensively today, but the big key was Evan hanging those zeroes."

After the home run by Hayes, Anderson buckled down and retired 13 straight UNA hitters before giving up a one-out single in the seventh inning to Peyton Sockwell. A ground ball and a fly out later and Anderson was out of the inning.

While Anderson was shutting down the Lions, Bush doubled in the fourth inning to score two runs and then doubled in another run in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4. Bush then scored on a wild pitch to put UWA up for good at 5-4.

"Our goal is to win the GSC and you have to win series to do that," Rundles said. "UNA is a very good baseball team and when you can get two of three from a quality team, that's a pretty good weekend."

Nick Delgado's double in the seventh chased Cockrum, who had reached on an error and the Tigers then scored two more without the aid of a hit in the eighth to put the game away.

In addition to striking out 13, Anderson (6-1) allowed four hits and didn't walk a batter. Brandon Pennington pitched out of a first and third jam to keep Anderson's decision intact in the eighth inning. Austin Sanders pitched a scoreless ninth.

North Alabama starter Todd Gibson (2-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits while walking four and striking out five.

Bush was the only UWA player with multiple hits. The senior from West Blocton, Alabama was 6-for-12 in the three-game series with four doubles and a home run, driving in six runs. In addition, Bush stretched his consecutive reached base streak to 27 games.

No UNA player had multiple hits. Hayes drove in four runs with the grand slam.
West Alabama travels to historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham to face Miles on Wednesday. First pitch is set for noon. North Alabama plays at doubleheader at Alabama A&M on Wednesday.
