Delgado Shines as 4th-Ranked UWA Cruise Past Miles, 16-6

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Nick Delgado had four hits, stole four bases, scored four runs and drove in two more as No. 4 West Alabama cruised to a 16-6 college baseball victory over Miles College Wednesday at historic Rickwood Field.
 
The Tigers improved to 23-5 with the win. Miles College dropped to 15-10.
 
West Alabama used a pair of hits, a wild pitch, hit batter and two stolen bases to set the tone with three runs in the top of the first inning. Miles scored a run on three hits in the bottom of the second, but UWA answered with a single run of its own in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Jake Bush.
 
The Golden Bears added anther run in the fourth inning on a hit and a Tiger error, but West Alabama answered with a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to stretch its lead to 7-2. Mitch Holgate and Delgado had back-to-back two-out doubles for the run in the fifth, while Josh Winningham drove in a run with a single and Davis Aiken another with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
 
West Alabama effectively put the game away by scoring four runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth to take a commanding 16-4 lead. Over that two inning span the Tigers sent 18 batters to the plate and had five hits while Miles pitchers walked seven.
 
The first of four West Alabama pitchers, starter Josh Jones (4-0), picked up the win after striking out three and allowing three hits. Miles starter Christopher Elias (1-2) was tagged with the loss, giving up seven runs and seven hits.
 
Holgate and Luigi Mendez had a pair of hits for West Alabama. Aiken drove in two with a pair of sacrifice flies. Dominique Dawson drove in two runs with a triple.
 
Kelend Smith had four hits and drove in two runs for Miles College. Chase Williams and Xavius Burden had two hits apiece for the Golden Bears.
 
West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference play by hosting Union University in a doubleheader Friday at 2 p.m. Miles College is scheduled to host Spring Hill College in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Friday at Rickwood.
