West Alabama Sweeps Valdosta State to Extend Win Streak to Seven Games

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama got three-run home runs from Adam Chamblee in the first game and Davis Aiken in the second game to complete a Gulf South Conference doubleheader sweep over Valdosta State Saturday at Tartt Field.

The victory extended 11th ranked UWA's win streak to seven games and improved the Tigers to 14-4 overall, 6-2 in GSC play. Valdosta State has lost four straight and dropped to 11-8 and 4-4.

"I really liked our tone and our demeanor today," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "There was a confidence in the dugout and we got the wins with folks other than the usual suspects carrying the load. We were solid all the way through today."

West Alabama starting pitchers Evan Anderson (4-1) and Anthony Rosati (1-0) earned the pitching wins. Anderson went the distance in game one, scattering four hits while striking out eight and walking two in the shutout. Rosati went five innings in the nightcap, allowing a run on three hits. He walked one and struck out five.

Valdosta State starters Mitchell Cody (2-2) and Kellan Bailey (3-2) were charged with the losses. Cody lasted just two-plus innings in the opener, allowing six runs on seven hits. Bailey went five in the nightcap, allowing five runs on six hits.

West Alabama jumped on the Blazers early and often in game one, leading 8-0 after three innings. A six-run explosion, highlighted by Chamblee's fifth homer of the year, effectively put the game away for the Tigers after three innings. Dylan Little and Josh Winningham both had three hits for UWA in the opener. Aiken and Chamblee had two hits apiece in the first game.

"Our offense set the tone early in game one and Evan pitched very well. Rosati threw well after he got settled in in game two," Rundles said. "There were a lot of great at bats in game one. When you can get to a starting pitcher early it really helps as the game progresses."

Valdosta State jumped to a 1-0 lead in the second game when Marcus Sigmon was hit by a Rosati pitch to open the second inning and eventually scored without the aid of a hit after a wild pitch and a balk.

Jake Bush tied the game with a solo home run, his second of the year, to lead off the bottom of the second. Aiken's three-run blast, his third, in the fifth inning put the Tigers up to stay in game two. Aiken drove in five runs in the two games.

Marcus Morrisette singled in the final UWA run in the bottom of the sixth. Valdosta State picked up a second run in the top of the seventh when Dalton Duty singled in Ryan Slaughter.

Only two VSU players had multiple hit games. Jaykob Graham had two in the opener and Duty had two hits in game two.
UWA third baseman Mitch Holgate extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a triple in game one and a single in the second game. Holgate and Bush have now reached base in each of West Alabama's 18 games. Bush has been on base 48 times in 18 games and Holgate 46.

The Tigers and Blazers are scheduled to finish the three-game series Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
