Luigi Mendez Has Three Hits as UWA Sweeps Valdosta State

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Luigi Mendez had three hits, including his first home run of the year, as West Alabama completed a three-game sweep of Valdosta State with a 5-1 victory Sunday at Tartt Field.

No. 11 West Alabama (15-4, 7-2) extended its winning streak to eight games. Valdosta State (11-9, 4-5) has lost five straight. Dating back to last season, West Alabama has now won six straight over the Blazers.

"I told our guys before the game that we already had a good weekend with the doubleheader sweep on Saturday, but with a win today we could have a great weekend," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "It turned into a great one."

As they have been doing for most of the early season, West Alabama used a big second inning as a springboard to a victory. The Tigers have scored 31 second-inning runs already this season, including four on Sunday against the Blazers.

Nick Delgado and Jake Bush walked to lead off the second. Mendez singled in Delgado and Dylan Little drove in Bush and Mendez with a single. Adam Chamblee doubled in Little for the fourth run of the inning.

Mendez hit his homer to lead off the Tiger half of the sixth inning. Valdosta State's lone run came off a solo homer from Cliff Bryant, also his first of the year.

Evan Miller (2-1) worked seven innings, allowing a run on five hits while walking one and striking out seven for the pitching win. Brandon Pennington and Austin Sanders did not allow a run over the final two innings. Blazer starter Kyle Andre (1-2) absorbed the loss.

"That was a great pitching performance by Miller today, but our pitching set the tone for the weekend," Rundles said. "Anytime you give up just three runs in a GSC series that's a solid weekend. Two of those came via a balk and a home run."

Little chipped in two hits for West Alabama. Jack Cockrum had a double for the Tigers. Mitch Holgate had his hitting streak snapped at 11 games and his on base streak broken at 18 games. Bush has now reached base in all 19 Tiger games.

No Valdosta player had more than one hit in the baseball game.

West Alabama begins a four-game road swing Wednesday in Tuscaloosa against Stillman College. The Tigers return to GSC play at Christian Brothers next weekend. Valdosta State has the week off before hosting Shorter next weekend.
