UWA Baseball Extends Win Streak to Nine Games

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.Jack Cockrum and Luigi Mendez had three hits apiece while Mitch Holgate drove in four runs as No. 7 West Alabama extended its winning streak to nine games with a 12-4 college baseball victory over Stillman Wednesday at Tiger Field.

West Alabama (16-4) returns to Gulf South Conference play this weekend at Christian Brothers (5-14) in Memphis. Stillman (2-16) gets back into Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play over the weekend at Spring Hill (10-8).

West Alabama struck for three runs on five hits in the top of the first inning, but Stillman answered with three of its own in the bottom of the inning when Josh McDaniel homered to centerfield with a pair of runners on.

Stillman led 4-3 after four innings, but West Alabama scored two runs without the aid of a hit in the top of the fifth and then sent 12 hitters to the plate in a seven-run sixth inning to put the game away.

Holgate hit his sixth homer of the year, a three-run shot to left field, in the Tiger sixth. Adam Chamblee doubled in a run, while Davis Aiken and Dylan Little singled in runs in the frame.

Aiken had two hits in the 15-hit UWA attack. Jake Bush extended his on-base streak to 20 games with a single and two walks.

Jonathan Porter (4-1) picked up the pitching win in relief of starter Josh Jones. Six UWA pitchers combined for nine strikeouts. Stillman reliever Zachary Savankham (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

With inclement weather expected in Memphis over the weekend, chances are good that the UWA and Christian Brothers series scheduled for Saturday at noon and Sunday at 1 p.m. could be shifted in order to dodge expected rain. A decision is expected to be finalized on Thursday.
