Jones, Pennington Shut Down Argos in 3-0 UWA Win

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Josh Jones and Brandon Pennington combined for a seven-hit shutout as West Alabama defeated West Florida, 3-0, in Gulf South Conference baseball Sunday at Jim Spooner Field.

The win snapped a six-game losing skid for West Alabama (27-11, 16-8) and ended West Florida's (26-12, 18-6) winning streak at 12 games.

"We needed this one," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "It was big for several reasons. One for where we had dropped to in the GSC standings, and secondly, we just needed it as a team. I believe this will be a big boost for us."

Jones (5-0) started and shut the Argos down for eight innings on just six hits while not walking a batter and striking out two. Pennington worked a scoreless ninth for his first save. West Florida starter J.T. Granat (6-3) absorbed the loss, allowing two runs on six hits over 5.1 innings pitched.

West Alabama struck early, putting up a pair of runs with two outs in the first inning. After a ground out and a popup, Mitch Holgate walked and Nick Delgado, Jake Bush and Luigi Mendez singled to give West Alabama an early lead. Bush and Mendez drove in the runs.

"I was proud of the way we responded early, putting a couple of runs up after getting two quick outs," Rundles said. "Josh Jones pitched one heckuva game. He just put this team on his shoulders and then Penny came in fresh and did well."

The Tigers added a single run in the seventh. Adam Chamblee singled to open the inning, was sacrificed over by Davis Aiken and then scored on a double by Jack Cockrum. It was all the Tigers would need with Jones in control.

"I was ready to go, especially with us losing two games yesterday," Jones said after his first GSC start of the year. "The six-game losing streak is no more. This is a good win for our baseball team over another good baseball team and I was happy to play a part."

Delgado had three hits to pace a 12-hit Tiger attack. The junior from Pompano Beach, Florida, finished the series 7-for-12. Holgate and Chamblee had a pair of hits for the Tigers, who left 11 runners on base.

Jean Figueroa and Ladeavon Matthews had two hits each for West Florida.

West Alabama begins an eight-game homestand Wednesday by hosting Spring Hill at 4 p.m. West Florida is host to North Georgia Wednesday.
