West Alabama Sweeps Shorter in GSC Doubleheader

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama's pitching staff held Shorter to just two runs in 22 innings, while Mitch Holgate and Luigi Mendez hit home runs to lead the Tigers to a Gulf South Conference doubleheader sweep over the Hawks Saturday at Tartt Field.

West Alabama won the first game, 3-2, in 15 innings and then shut Shorter out, 4-0, in the nightcap to improve to 29-11 overall and 18-8 in league play. The Hawks fell to 13-27 and 6-20.

Brandon Pennington (1-0) worked seven innings of relief to earn the pitching win in game one and game-two starter Evan Miller (5-3) went seven innings for the shutout win. Jacob Ramos (4-4) and Tyler Cates (1-3) took the losses for the Hawks.

West Alabama jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings in the opener when Nick Delgado drove in both runs with singles in the first and third innings. Dustin Lawson singled and scored in both the seventh and ninth to tie the game for the Hawks. Jerry Liang drove Lawson home in the seventh on a fielder's choice and Greg Gladden singled him in in the ninth to spoil the save for Pennington.

Pennington, who had not pitched more than two innings in a single outing all season, remained for seven innings after blowing the save to earn the win, scattering four hits while allowing a run and striking out three. UWA starter Jorge Cruz went seven innings and allowed just a run and five hits.

A throwing error off a ground ball from Josh Winningham allowed Jake Bush to score the game winner with one out in the bottom of the 15th in game one. Bush and Jack Cockrum finished two hits for UWA, while Delgado had three.  Lawson, Liang and Gladden had two hits each in the opener for Shorter.

Cates, the Hawks game two starter sat down the first 11 West Alabama batters of the game before Holgate singled with two outs in the fourth. Holgate then stole second and came around to score on throwing errors by Lawson and centerfielder Raul Cortes on the same play.

Mendez' solo homer, his second of the year, came with one out in the fifth. Holgate hit his 10th homer, a solo shot in the sixth to chase Cates. Marcus Morrisette's pinch-hit single in the sixth drove in the fourth UWA run.

Delgado got another hit in the nightcap and is 11 for his last 20 over the last five games. Lawson got two more hits in the second game for Shorter.

The Tigers and Hawks play game three Sunday at 1 p.m.
