Tigers Shutout Hawks to Sweep Series

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Three Tiger pitchers threw nine shutout innings and Mitch Holgate drove in four runs as West Alabama defeated Shorter, 8-0, in Gulf South Conference baseball Sunday at Tartt Field.

The win completed a three-game sweep for the Tigers (30-11, 19-8) over the Hawks (13-28, 6-21) and propelled UWA into a tie for second place in the league standings with Delta State, who lost two of three to West Florida at home this weekend.

Josh Jones (6-0) started and earned the win after scattering seven hits, striking out nine and walking nobody in six innings of work. Austin Sanders allowed a hit and struck out two over two innings and David Cromer worked a scoreless ninth for the Tigers. Nate Bock (0-1), the first of six Shorter pitchers, took the loss.

Combined with eight shutout innings at West Florida last Sunday, Jones has now worked 14 straight shutout innings in GSC play and has allowed just one run in his last 23 innings pitched. Jones has also not walked a batter over those same 23 innings.

West Alabama gave up just two runs in 31 innings pitched in the Shorter series to lower the team earned run average to 3.10. Tiger pitchers have allowed just two runs in the last 40 innings.

"Josh has been lights out for the last couple of weeks," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "The biggest thing is he hasn't walked anybody since March 9. I am proud of all our pitchers."

West Alabama led 5-0 when Holgate launched a three-run homer, his 11th of the season, in the fifth inning. Holgate had also driven in a run with a double in a two-run Tiger fourth. Dylan Little also had a pair of hits and drove in two runs for UWA.

Right fielder Blaze Vazquez had three of 10 Shorter hits. The Hawks left eight runners on base and West Alabama left 14.

West Alabama continues a seven-game homestand when Montevallo visits Wednesday for a 5 p.m. non-conference game. The Tigers are host to West Georgia (30-10, 18-9) next weekend. The Wolves have won 13 straight games.
