Chamblee, Mendez Combine for Seven RBI in 15-4 Win over Montevallo

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Adam Chamblee and Luigi Mendez combined to drive in seven runs to lead West Alabama to a 15-4 college baseball victory over Montevallo Wednesday at Tartt Field.

The win improved West Alabama to 31-11 with a big Gulf South Conference series against West Georgia (32-10) this weekend at Tartt Field. Montevallo dropped to 24-23 with the loss.

Chamblee had a pair of doubles and hit his sixth home run of the season to drive in four runs. The senior from Winona, Mississippi, had an RBI double in a six-run third inning and a two-run homer in a seven-run eighth for West Alabama. Mendez drove in two runs with a single in the third and another with a single in the eighth.

"I was proud of the way our guys came out ready to play tonight," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "We spotted them a run in the first and then put together two really big innings to put the game away against a good baseball team."

West Alabama scored 32 runs on 31 hits in two wins over Montevallo this year. Wednesday's game against the Falcons was the final non-conference game of the year for both teams.

Nick Delgado continued to swing a hot bat for West Alabama, reaching base four times with three singles and a walk. The junior from Pompano Beach, Florida, is 15 for his last 28 (.536) and riding a seven-game hitting streak. Jack Cockrum also chipped in a pair of hits for UWA.

Brady Badon (2-0), the second of five Tiger pitchers, was credited with the win. Badon gave up a run on two hits over two innings in relief of starter Evan Anderson, who allowed a run on a hit. Severino Signa gave up two runs in one inning, one a solo homer off the bat of Taylor Walker, his 15th of the year. David Cromer and Austin Sanders handled the final four innings in shutout fashion, with Cromer striking out three.

Montevallo starter Chris Piteo (3-2) absorbed the loss, allowing three runs on four hits over 2.1 innings pitched. The Falcons also used five pitchers. No Montevallo player had multiple hits as UWA pitchers allowed just six.

West Alabama is currently tied for second place in the GSC standings with Delta State State, both with 19-8 records. West Florida leads the league at 20-7, but West Georgia has won 15 straight games and is tied with Alabama Huntsville one game behind UWA at 18-9.

First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. First pitch for UWA's Senior Day on Sunday is 1 p.m.
