Lee Sweeps West Alabama in GSC Doubleheader

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Trent Hill had the game-winning hit in game one and then drove in five runs in the second game to lead Lee to a Gulf South Conference doubleheader sweep of No. 5 West Alabama Saturday at Olympic Field. The Flames won the opener, 5-4, and the second game, 7-4.

West Alabama (26-7, 15-5) had not been swept in a doubleheader since Feb. 28 of last season when UNA beat the Tigers twice in Florence, Alabama. Lee (19-13, 9-9) has a modest four-game winning streak and has won eight of its last 10 GSC games.

"Sometimes there are going to be bad days, and today was certainly one of them," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "Lee is a good baseball team that is playing well, and when you leave runners like we have been doing it will eventually catch up to you. It did today."

West Alabama left 20 runners on base in the doubleheader while Lee was economical, scoring five runs on just five hits in the opener and seven runs on nine hits in the second game.

Lee jumped to a 3-0 lead into he first game, but UWA scored two runs in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth with the top closer in the GSC on the mound.

Kyle Briner drew a leadoff walk in the ninth and then UWA closer Austin Sanders hit Ben Holland to put runner at first and second with nobody out. Ty Broady sacrificed the runners to second and third before Hill's walk-off double.

Lee reliever Corbin Lamb (4-0) pitched four innings of shutout baseball, striking out six, to earn the win in game one. Sanders (1-1) was tagged with the loss.

Flames starter Justin Alleman (4-3) went the distance for the game two win, striking out seven. UWA starter Anthony Rosati (2-2) took the loss in spite of allowing just two earned runs. Jorge Cruz pitched the last two innings for UWA, not allowing a run on one hit while striking out two.

Lee wasted little time in the nightcap, jumping out to a 7-0 lead after four innings, thanks mainly to Hill, who had doubled, singled and homered to drive in five runs in the first four innings. The homer was Hill's fourth.

West Alabama rallied for three runs in the sixth inning of the second game and another in the seventh, but it turned out to be too little, too late for the Tigers. Luigi Mendez, who had four hits in the doubleheader, and Josh Winningham both had run-scoring doubles in the sixth inning. Nick Delgado drove in Jack Cockrum, who doubled with one out in the seventh for the final margin.

"If there were any bright spots for us today," Rundles said, "it would be how well Jorge (Cruz) pitched and the fact that we kept playing after getting down seven runs in the second game."

Mitch Holgate doubled and tripled for West Alabama in the first game. The triple for Holgate was the 15th of his career, making him the sole career record holder for triples in UWA history.

UWA and Lee finish the three-game series with a single game Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CDT.
