Tigers Wait Out Tornado Warning to Split with UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The tornado sirens made the West Alabama bats come to life late in game two as the Tigers came from behind to split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader with Alabama Huntsville Saturday at Charger Park.

UAH won the opener, 4-2, after UWA left nine runners on base and failed to score after getting the first two runners on base in both the first and eighth innings. The Tigers took the nightcap, 5-2.

Both West Alabama (34-13, 22-10) and Alabama Huntsville (31-17, 21-11) have already earned a berth in the GSC Tournament that begins Saturday at Spooner Field on the West Florida campus in Pensacola.

The Tigers were trailing 2-1 in the second game when the tornado sirens on the UAH campus sounded in the middle of the fifth inning. Following the 35-minute delay, West Alabama used their last six outs to get six hits and score four runs for the win.

Marcus Morrisette's third home run of the season, a solo shot in the fifth, was UWA's only run in the nightcap until after the weather break.

Nick Delgado walked to lead off the sixth and Jake Bush singled for his third hit of the game. Dylan Little's ground-rule double scored Delgado before Morrisette drove in two more with a single. A sacrifice fly by Luigi Mendez in the seventh added to the final total.

Josh Jones (7-0) pitched six innings, including coming back after the delay to earn the UWA pitching win. Jones scattered four hits and allowed two runs while striking out six and walking one. UAH starter Will Myers (7-5), who also came back after the break, took the loss.

Alabama Huntsville would not go quietly, however, loading the bases with one out in the Chargers' final at bat. Brandon Pennington struck out the only two hitters he faced on six pitches to ensure the UWA win and his third save.

UAH scored a pair of runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth to notch the win in game one. Trey Mathis hit his ninth homer, a two-run shot, in the second. Zach Dugas had a sacrifice fly and Michael Fox drove in a run to account for Charger scoring in game one. Dugas had a two-run homer in game two, his third.

Wilson Adams (10-2) worked 7.1 innings, striking out seven and walking one, to earn the win in the first game. Taylor Clemons went the rest of the way for his eighth save. Jorge Cruz (2-2) took the UWA loss.

Jack Cockrum and Dylan Little had three and two hits, respectively, in the first game for UWA. Cockrum had a pair of doubles and went 4-for-9 in the doubleheader. Adam Chamblee had a two-run homer for the Tigers in game one, his seventh of the year.

Trey Mathis had four hits over the two games for UAH.

The third game of the series is set for Sunday with first pitch at 1 p.m.
