Sunday Win Earns West Alabama Series Win at UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Jack Cockrum, Nick Delgado and Marcus Morrisette all homered as West Alabama came from five runs down to defeat Alabama Huntsville, 15-8, Sunday at Charger Park and win the Gulf South Conference series over the Chargers.

West Alabama (35-13, 23-10) ensured itself of no worse than a third seed in the GSC Tournament that begins Saturday in Pensacola, Florida. Alabama Huntsville (31-18, 21-12) will be the No. 5 seed.

UAH came out firing on all cylinders early in Sunday's game, scoring five runs in the first two innings, thanks in big part of a three-run home run from A.J. Walden, his 13th of the year in the first inning.

UWA, on the other hand, was in the game for the long haul. After spotting the Chargers a 5-0 lead after two innings, the Tigers scored at least one run in every inning the rest of the way.

"I am very proud of this team for not getting down after UAH came out so strong early," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "We just kept playing baseball and believing in each other to outlast a very good baseball team."

Morrisette's ninth-inning home run was his second in as many games and his fourth of the year. He also went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, finishing the last two games at Charger Park 5-for-6 with two homers and six RBI.

Delgado finished the day by going 3-for-4 with the homer and two doubles, while reaching base five times and stealing a league-leading 22nd base. Cockrum added a double and three runs batted in to his homer.

Mitch Holgate, Adam Chamblee and Luigi Mendez all had two hits for UWA, with Holgate and Mendez driving in two runs and Chamblee one.

Tiger starter Evan Miller (6-4) hung in through 5.2 innings to earn the pitching win despite allowing five runs on nine hits. Jonathan Porter, David Cromer and Brandon Pennington finished up, allowing just one earned run between them. Cromer, who recorded five outs on just 14 pitches, and Pennington each allowed just one hit.

Charger starter Heath McCrae (6-4) was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out two. UAH used six pitchers in the game.

Ben Rhodes and Matt Spruill both had three hits for the Chargers. Zach Dugas had two hits and drove in a run.
