Stillman Pitchers Quiet West Alabama Bats in 5-1 Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Four Stillman College pitchers limited No. 17 West Alabama to just three hits and struck out 14 as SC defeated UWA, 5-1, in college baseball Wednesday at Tartt Field.

Stillman (13-21) has now won 11 of its last 12 games and has beaten UWA in two of three meetings this season. West Alabama (26-9) has lost four straight.

Stillman starter and winning pitcher Zach Gonzalez (1-6) retired the first 13 UWA hitters before Josh Winningham broke up the perfect game with a one-out single in the fifth inning. Gonzalez walked one and struck out nine. Josh Freeman allowed two hits and UWA's only run. Kewayne McCray and Dakota Todd didn't allow a hit or run in the final 2.2 innings.

West Alabama starter Jorge Cruz (1-1) was the hard luck loser, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out 10 and walking two in six innings. Brady Badon allowed a hit and a run in three innings.

Stillman took a 3-0 lead in the third inning when John Hutto singled and Lucas Bigler walked in front of a triple by Nick Vitale. SC got single runs in the fourth and seventh. Hank Parker singled in the fourth and scored on one of three UWA errors. Josh McDaniel's sixth home run, a solo shot to left field, finished Stillman scoring.

Winningham, who had two of West Alabama's three hits, hit a solo home run to lead off the seventh for UWA's only run. It was Winningham's first homer of the season. Tyler Lee singled in the seventh for West Alabama's only other hit.

Parker had two of Stillman's five hits and Vitale had the two runs batted in.

West Alabama travels to Pensacola, Florida, to meet No. 25 West Florida (24-11, 16-5) in a three-game series beginning Saturday. The Argonauts are tied with No. 18 Delta State for the top spot in the Gulf South Conference standings. UWA is a game back of the Argos and Statesmen.

Stillman is host to Kentucky State in a three game series this weekend.
