Argos Extend Tigers Losing Skid to Six Games With Doubleheader Sweep

PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida used a bases-loaded walk-off base on balls in game one and a six-run inning in game two to sweep a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from West Alabama Saturday at Jim Spooner Field. The Argos won the first game 7-6 in 10 innings and the nightcap, 7-1.

No. 16 West Florida (26-11, 18-5) extended it winning streak to 12 games, while No. 17 West Alabama (26-11, 15-8) lost for the sixth straight time. The six-game losing skid is the most since the Tigers lost seven straight to end the 2014 season.

West Alabama jumped to a 4-0 lead in game one and led 5-4 heading to the seventh inning. Kyle Hamner's solo home run, his second of the season, gave the Argos a 5-4 lead after seven innings. Hamner extended his hitting streak to 22 games with the homer.

Nick Delgado drove in three of UWA's first five runs with a single in the first and a double in the third inning. Adam Chamblee singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch in the fourth before Dylan Little singled in Luigi Mendez, who had led off the sixth inning with his second double.

Jack Cockrum singled with one out in the 10th and scored on a Delgado triple before handing the ball to closer Austin Sanders, who gave up a double to start the bottom of the 10th, an RBI single to Nick Kerkmann and then walked Alex Greene with the bases loaded for the game winner.

Reliever Jarrod Petree (3-1) picked up the pitching win in game one for the Argos. Walker O'Conner (7-2) went the distance in the nightcap scattering five hits, and striking out six while allowing just one run.

Sanders (1-2) took the opening loss, allowing a second consecutive save opportunity to get away. Tiger starter Evan Miller (4-3) allowed five earned runs on six hits over four innings to take the loss in the second game. Brady Badon and David Cromer combined to allow a run on one hit in the final two innings of the nightcap, with Cromer tossing a 1-2-3 sixth inning.

With the score tied 1-1 in the second game, West Florida sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth inning, scoring six runs on four hits. Miller walked two and Badon hit two in that frame as well.

UWF first baseman Justin Ambrosina had five hits in the doubleheader, including four in the opener. Hamner, Kerkmann and Jimmy Redovian each had a pair of hits in the first game for the Argos.

Delgado had four hits and drove in four runs in the twinbill for West Alabama, including double and a triple in game one. Cockrum had three hits, including his third triple of the year before leaving the second game with severe leg cramps.

Mitch Holgate had three hits for the Tigers and Mendez two.

The Argos and Tigers are scheduled to finish the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. Josh Jones (4-0) is scheduled to be the UWA starting pitcher.
