Lopes Homers Twice as UWG Beats UWA 7-3

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Caleb Lopes hit two home runs to lead West Georgia to a 7-3 college baseball win over West Alabama in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament Saturday at Jim Spooner Field on the campus of the University of West Florida.

With the win, the Wolves (38-12) advance to play Delta State (35-15) Sunday at 7 p.m. West Alabama (35-14), the defending GSC Champions, will be fighting for its tournament life against West Florida (34-13) at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Lopes hit a solo homer to lead off the fifth inning and then added a two-run shot, his eighth of the season, in the eighth inning. He also walked and stole a base while scoring three runs.

Riding the right arm of starter and winner Matthew Norton (7-1), West Georgia led 5-1 after six innings and was never really threatened. West Alabama came into the game averaging almost eight runs per game, but Norton limited the Tigers to just three through seven-plus innings while striking out four.

West Alabama starter Jorge Cruz (2-3) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits. He walked three and struck out four.

Cade Marlowe had three hits and drove in a run to pace a 12-hit UWG attack, improving his batting average to .436. Garrett Hayes and Drew Eady had two hits each for the Wolves.

Marcus Morrisette had a single and a triple for West Alabama, who had 10 hits. Mitch Holgate chipped in a pair of singles.

Left-hander Josh Jones (7-0, 3.99) is scheduled to pitch Sunday for West Alabama against the hosting Argos. The game can be heard live in the Twin States on ESPN 104.9 or internationally on the espn1049 app.
