Five TD Passes, Four Picks Lead Tigers to 43-28 Win Over Shorter

ROME, Ga. – Austin Grammer threw five touchdown passes, three of them to Corey Davis, as West Alabama defeated Shorter, 43-28, in Gulf South Conference football Thursday at historic Barron Stadium.

The Tigers improved to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in GSC play while rolling up 480 total yards. Shorter is now 0-5 and 0-3.

Grammer was 34-of-50 for 340 yards in three quarters of play. He was intercepted once; a 68-yard pick six by Shorter's Kevin Knight in the third quarter. The senior from Tuscaloosa, Alabama was two scoring passes short of the West Alabama school record held by Marty Washington, who had seven against Delta State in 1993.

"With the type offense we run its just what happens in the rhythm of the game as to who gets the football," Grammer said. "Corey had a big night tonight and Donta (Armstrong) a big night earlier this year. Don't forget Tray Fletcher. He made a great play for his score.

"It just shows that when we get into a rhythm and execute we have a chance to be pretty good," Grammer said.

West Alabama led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter on touchdown hookups by Grammer and Davis of 35 and 6 yards. Shorter managed just 40 yards total offense in the period. Davis finished with nine receptions for 120 yards in his UWA coming out party.

"It was just a matter of me getting the feel back and it's great to be back," Davis said. "I owe it to everybody on this team. I got my mojo back tonight, but I was just the one who was open."

West Alabama led 27-6 after Grammer found Fletcher for a 5-yards TD pass and Dee Virgin cashed in a 34-yard pick six, his third interception of the season. Fletcher had six catches for 53 yards.

"It was like I always say, see ball catch ball," Virgin said of his interception for the score. "I got a good three-step read and broke on it. I knew it was six so I tried to get fancy and ended up having to secure the ball. It had been a minute since I have been in the end zone."

"We did some good things at times and started strong, but we lost focus and got lazy with our eyes later in the game," UWA head coach Brett Gilliland said. "Shorter never quit fighting. Thankfully we were able to seal the game away in the first three quarters."

West Alabama's defense collected a season-high four interceptions. In addition to Virgin, Torrence Willis, Tavarious Hutchinson and A.J. Skinner had picks for the Tigers. Hutchinson also led UWA with six tackles. Willis and Charles Bester each had five stops for the Tigers.

"We executed early and Coach (Nathan) Burton called a great game," Hutchinson said. "Getting four interceptions was fun. Kind of a candy day. They offered us some gimmes and we just made plays."

Shorter got a late first half touchdown when Tyler Pullum connected with Austin Miller for 19 yards out with 39 seconds left before the break.

Donta Armstrong was on the receiving end of Grammer's fourth TD pass, a 4-yarder early in the third quarter. Armstrong had seven receptions for 55 yards. Tiger tight end Christian Patterson had five receptions for 59 yards.

Jordan Bennett's 24-yard field goal and four extra-point kicks completed West Alabama scoring.

Knight's interception and the two-point conversion cut the UWA lead to 34-14 at 9:17 in the third quarter. The interception was the first of the year for any West Alabama quarterback.

Shorter scored all the points in the fourth quarter on an 8-yard run by Pullum and a 2-yard touchdown pass from Pullum to Elijah Gilbert.

Pullum finished 12-of-19 for 171 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Shorter starting quarterback Matt Williams was 2-for-13 for 24 yards with two interceptions. Gilbert had four receptions for 82 yards and Dante Borders led Hawk rushers with 43 yards on 11 carries.

Jevaris Jones led all tacklers with 11 for Shorter.

West Alabama is host to Delta State on Oct. 8. Shorter is host to Clark Atlanta on Thursday.
