LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Mississippi College edged out West Alabama men's soccer in the Tigers' Gulf South Conference opener, defeating UWA
1-0 at Tiger Stadium on Friday.
The Tigers fall to 4-4 overall on the year, dropping to 0-1 in league play. The Choctaws improve to 6-1-1, staying perfect at 4-0 in conference action.
"It was a great performance by our team," UWA head coach
Matthew Thorne said. "Unfortunately, we're just very unlucky to come out with a loss."
"I give Mississippi College their due. They battled hard and defended well. It was just one of those freak goals where a cross goes into the top corner of the net, but take nothing away from them. For us, we brought an excellent intensity and set the bar really high. It's just unfortunate not to get a result."
Jacob Farthing netted the eventual game-winner in the 68
th minute when a cross from 26 yards out found the back right corner of the net. The score marked Farthing's fifth of the season.
"I thought we might come away with a draw or even nick the win, but that's football," Thorne said. "Sometimes you're the better side, and you end up on the wrong side of the score line."
The Tigers out-shot the Choctaws 10-6, landing six on target while the game-clincher was MC's lone shot on goal.
Jean-Baptiste Meyniel finished with 2-of-3 shots on goal.
Harrison Roberts,
Clay Green and
Keegan McQueen each went 1-for-1 on the night.
"There were a lot of good performances from our lads, and I want to take more positives away from tonight," Thorne said. "It's disappointing to lose in such a manner, but if we perform like that every game, we're going all the way to the end."
Humberto Pelaez (5-1-1) earned the win, making six saves in the match.
Brad Louis (3-4) took the loss, allowing one goal om seven shots faced.
The Tigers will continue at home as they take on Delta State in GSC play on Sunday.
Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
